Heritage Centre Artefacts – lace knitwear

Hand spun, hand knit items in the Centre include some with motifs like crowns.

When there was a royal “occassion” a stole or shawl with a royal motif would often be sent as a gift to royalty.

Many of the patterns have evocative names such as “print o the wave” , peerie flea” .

Among the collection are a set of items found in an old shop on the island and dated as from the late 1800s . A letter found with them tells the story of a gentleman who was disabled and trying to earn for his household by knitting.
