Muness Castle

The years following Norse rule and conversion to Scottish rule are considered years of oppression in Shetland.  Udal law gave way to Feudal law and a mixture of population growth, some poor harvests, and clearances caused many people to leave the Islands in the 1800’s. Muness Castle built in 1597 stands as a monument to one of the worst outcasts from the Scottish Royal family.
